Marzipan Surprises

Marzipan chocolates are a delicious treat, especially if they are homemade. It’s so easy, you just have to try.

And if you like marzipan chocolates as much as I do you will also like my German marzipan potatoes.

  • 227g / 8oz of marzipan (almond paste)
  • 28 roasted hazelnuts
  • 113g / 4oz of dark chocolate, melted
  • white or milk chocolate for decoration (at your pleasure), melted

  1. Roast the hazelnuts: Preheat the oven to 180°C / 355°F. Spread hazelnuts evenly on a cookie baking sheet. Place in the oven on the middle rack and roast for 8 – 12 minutes. Check the roasting progress from time to time to prevent burning. The hazelnuts are ready when they’ve developed a golden brown color and a nutty aroma starts spreading in your kitchen. Take out of the oven and let cool down completely.

  2. Shape the pralines: Roll the marzipan into 28 balls. Press roasted hazelnut into the center of each ball and roll again until each ball is perfectly round and smooth.

  3. Coat with chocolate and decorate: Dip each ball into melted chocolate. Chill until chocolate sets. Decorate with white or milk chocolate. Store in an airtight container or make them a gift by filling the chocolates in small cellophane gift bags decorated with a handwritten tag.
