Marzipankartoffeln is little round or potato-shaped candy (hence the name) sold in Germany especially around the Christmas time. I still had some leftover marzipan from my Christmas baking so I decided to make those chewy and tender bonbons for my little marzipan connoisseurs (I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree 😉 )
Marzipan Potatoes (Marzipankartoffeln)
- 200g / 7oz of marzipan (in the US sometimes called almond paste)
- 75g / 3oz of icing (confectioners’) sugar
- 1/2 tsp of water or more if necessary
- 50g / 2oz of sugar
- 1/2 tsp of dark cocoa powder
- Shape the marzipan potatoes:Sieve the icing sugar into a bowl and knead it with the marzipan until the entire sugar is incorporated into the marzipan. If the mixture is too stiff or dry add the water, few drops at a time. Form the marzipan into rolls, cut off walnut-sized portions and shape into balls or small potatoes. Use a wooden skewer to prick small dots into the potatoes.
- Decorate: Mix sugar with cocoa powder in a bowl. Roll or toss the potatoes in it until well coated. Then put the potatoes on a sieve and shake off the excess cocoa powder and sugar. Fertig!
Tip: Wrapped in small, decorative bags marzipan potatoes make a super gift.
